Solidarity with trans and gender diverse people

Rainbow Hub SA recently sent the following letter to media outlets.

Dear Sir,

Rainbow Hub South Australia Inc (RHSA) is an Independent Community Guided organisation providing a voice for older LGBTI+ people in South Australia. Rainbow Hub SA provides connection through advocacy, projects, events and information sharing.

Rainbow Hub SA stands in solidarity with trans and gender diverse people, acknowledging that media coverage and community debate impacts all members of the trans and gender diverse communities.

We endorse the recent Joint Statement published by Equality Australia where medical experts, health bodies and LGBTIQ+ groups have cautiously welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement it will review the treatment guidelines for trans and gender diverse young people. But they said the process must be led by the experts, remain free of political interference and not block continued care across the country.

Furthermore, RHSA feels the recent Executive Order by President Donald Trump declaring that there are just two genders: male and female is dismissive, contemptuous and ill-informed. This order dismisses that people can transition from one gender to another, that some people can identify as non-binary. Further, that some infants are born with genitals that do not match their reproductive organs, or may have traits of both. Being intersex may be discovered at birth, during youth or later in life.

Our concern is that many of the political decisions made in the United States may eventually find their way to Australia to this country’s, and our LGBTI+ communities detriment.

Kind regards

Peter K. Jones, Chair, Rainbow Hub SA Inc
