We were honoured to be invited to be part of a LGBTIQA+ Community Round Table at SAMESH in Adelaide on 1 September co-chaired by Dr Anna Cody, Sex Discrimination Commissioner and Ruby Mountford, Specialist Advisor, Australian Human Rights Commission.
Three Committee Members Peter Jones, Jackie Wurm and Jess Evans also had the opportunity to meet with them the next day to speak about issues for older LGBTI+ people in SA. Jess was able to thank the Commissioner personally for speaking up so clearly and quickly on the implications of recent challenges to Trans rights in the UK.
Some of the other issues we discussed included:
- ageism and invisibility
- advocacy, including being a voice and connection point for isolated community members
- importance of dedicated resourcing for our vital community work
- support RHSA has received from peer and ally organisations in SA that has been much appreciated
- our support for the Human Rights Act for SA campaign and provide copies of our report on Ageing well and Rights Toolkit.
We also heard about and support moves to set up a national community legal service for LGBTI+ people.
