The international trans day of visibility, or TDOV as it is often referred to, is an annual event occurring every 31 March since its inception back in 2009.
This event is all about the celebration of transgendered people and recognising their achievements as well as highlighting and raising awareness of the discrimination faced by the trans community world wide.
The event was founded back in 2009 by a transactivist Rachel Crandell Crocker who was frustrated that the only well known transgender-centred day was the Transgendered day of remembrance (20 November) which morns the murders of trans people, but does not celebrate and acknowledge living members of the community.
Over the years the TDOV has gained a momentum that reaches across the world with events that illuminates and normalises transpeople, showing that they live vibrant and full lives and helping to build a better understanding and empathy with the cisgendered majority (cis gendered – a person whose gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth i.e., someone who is not transgender).
